During the session, three leading experts in Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) and the microbiome (Dr. Sahil Khanna, Dr. Gareth Walker, and Dr. Ted Steiner) discuss why preventing recurrence of CDI is so critical for patients and highlight the available management approaches. The speakers will also present a patient case to illustrate a stepwise approach to managing CDI and recurrent CDI (rCDI).

Dr. Sahil Khanna

Dr. Sahil Khanna, MBBS, MS, FACG, AGAF

Dr. Sahil Khanna is a Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Mayo Clinic, where he leads inpatient practice and is Director of the Comprehensive Interest Group. A global expert in CDI and microbiome therapeutics, he is also a Director of Mayo’s C. difficile Clinic and FMT programme. Dr. Khanna has led numerous clinical trials – both investigator-initiated and industry-funded published extensively in leading journals and served on editorial boards and national guideline panels. His work continues to shape innovations in microbiome-based therapies and gastroenterology.

Dr. Gareth Walker,

Dr. Gareth Walker, BSc (Hons) MBBS FRCP FRACP PhD

Associate Professor Gareth Walker is the Clinical Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Research at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Conjoint Head of the Walker Laboratory at the University of Queensland, and an Honorary Scientist at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. His expertise lies in precision medicine for IBD including biomarker driven care pharmacogenetics and digital health solutions. A former UK NHS consultant and PhD graduate from Exeter University. Prof Walker has led major service innovations and holds key roles with the ANZIBD Scientific Committee as well as giving specialist evidence to the Australian Advisory Committee on Medicines. His current research focuses on spatial transcriptomic and AI predictors of biologic drug response, remote disease monitoring in rural Australia using digital point-of-care testing, and a large-scale data linkage analyses to uncover IBD healthcare inequities.

Dr. Ted Steiner

Dr. Ted Steiner, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Ted Steiner is a Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases. He specializes in gastrointestinal disorders, with an interest in CDI, IBD, and FMT. Dr. Steiner has led clinical trials and numerous translational studies and actively contributes to national treatment guidelines. He is an alumnus of Harvard, Duke, and the University of Virginia, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and an esteemed mentor to doctorate students and postdoctoral fellows.
